First of all your blog is terrific. I've been following it for a few months now. I agree that there is much confusion in the Gatorade product line up as well as in the overall market. One thing has not changed in Gatorade's R&D philosophy: they continue to use an excessive amount of procesed sugars in each of their products. Any product intended for use before or during prolonged intense training/exercise that contains high levels of sugar is likely to cause some sort of gastric distress due to poor emptying of sugars from the stomach. This can lead to bloating, nausea, ineffective nutrient delivery of the electrolytes, as well as other performance inhibitors. I know of many triathletes, runners and cyclists who have given up on it entirely for these reasons. Football players, soccer players, and basketball players can have similar issues, in addition to cramping from poor electrolyte absorbtion. Another important concern is the insulin spiking effect that leads to rapid declines in energy when athletes need it the most.

Athletes of all ages need to be better skilled at looking beyond marketing sizzle and learn to more skillfully read labels in order to determine the best fuel sources for their pre and post-training needs. You do an excellent job of helping to educate an underserved population of young and mature athletes alike. Keep up the great work!
